The secret to a good book is that it has no secrets. A good book is one you’ve read and want to read again. It creates a world you can enter anywhere and still inhabit comfortably. It doesn’t deceive you with thrills and cliffhangers. It doesn’t surprise you with the unforeseen. It feels familiar like the house you live in. You know how it’s going to end, yet you read as if you don’t. In a good book, you know who lives, who dies, who succeeds, who doesn’t. And yet you want to know it again. That is its mystery and its magic.

Twelfth Fail is one such good book. The preface will let you know that this is the story of IPS Officer Manoj Kumar Sharma. There’s no suspense as to whether the young teen who failed his twelfth because he couldn’t cheat, would ever make it big. There are no thrills or cliffhangers; you always know exactly what the end result will be but does that make the book any less interesting? No, not at all.

The author Anurag Pathak has done his duty as a biographer well. He does not extol the virtues of his protagonist nor does he emphasize his faults. He leaves those decisions in the hands of the reader. He just paints as realistic a picture as possible. It would have been easy to gloss over the failures and document just the successes but like a good biographer, Pathak avoids this pitfall. While there are times you do wish to know more about the stories of some of the side characters but that is a testament to the skill of the author to be able to arouse that curiosity.
